Defence secretary Gavin Williamson just gave a speech this afternoon responding to the incident in Salisbury in which he told Russia to ‘go away and shut up’.

Watch the bizarre Russia response from Williamson here:

Here are some of the more biting reviews on Twitter (nothing from the Russian Embassy in London yet though…):

1) Time to defect to Russia?

2) Not… fiery enough

3) Like a less butch David Miliband

4) Childish

5) A sobering reminder

Scrapbook reported earlier today on Tory cuts to the MoD that may have left the UK open to attack. Telling Russia to ‘go away’ seems a rather less effective strategy than proper funding for defence…

  1. patrick newman says:

Is he a resurrection of Hary Enfield’s Tory Boy, or maybe Rik Mayall has returned to haunt us with Alan B’Stard. Perhaps he is the new IDS!

  2. We’ve had some rousing speeches over the centuries…

‘Once more unto the breach dear friends, once more; or close the wall up with our English dead.’

‘I may have the body of a weak and feeble woman…But I have the heart and stomach of a king…’ (No – definitely NOT theresa said that)

‘England expects that every man will do his duty…’

‘ We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender.’

But: ‘Go away and shut up’ knocks them all into a cocked hat.

    Bravo, private pike!!
