Toby Young is clinging to his taxpayer-funded job by his fingernails after MPs from all parties piled pressure on the Government to sack him from the board of the universities regulator.

Universities Minister Jo Johnson was hauled before MPs to answer an urgent question from Labour shadow equalities secretary Dawn Butler about the controversial appointment.

But it wasn’t just opposition MPs who criticised the appointment. Johnson came under fire from two MPs on his own side – Robert Halfon and Sarah Wollaston.

The intervention of Halfon, who is the chair of Parliament’s education select committee, is particularly damaging to the Government’s bid to protect young.

He described an article Young wrote about eugenics as recently as 2015 as incredibly dark and very dangerous stuff.”

Sarah Wollaston said that Young had “crossed a line” with some of his tweets:

The Government probably hoped today’s reshuffle would help bury the Young story.

But not even MPs on their own side aren’t going to let them get away with this one…

  1. Funny how his own party defends his previous misdemeanours by alluding to their age when they were only too happy to savage Jared O’Mara’s wholly inappropriate comments from a few years ago

  2. Strangely ironic how his own party defends his previous misdemeanours by alluding to their age when they were only too happy to savage Jared O’Mara’s wholly inappropriate comments from a few years ago
