Nigel Farage is being investigated by media watchdog Ofcom after claiming a Swedish city is the “rape capital of Europe” because of immigration.
The UKIP leader made the statement during his LBC Radio phone-in show on February 20 while defending similar comments made by Donald Trump. Farage said:
“Sweden has taken in more young male migrants than any other country in Europe and there has been a dramatic rise in sexual crime in Sweden.
“So much so, that Malmo is now the rape capital of Europe, and some argue that perhaps it is the rape capital of the world.
“And there is a Swedish media who frankly just don’t report it. And if any of those comments by me on Sweden have enraged any of you then please feel free to call in.”
During a rally the night before the LBC show, Trump had told his supporters that they only had to “look at what’s happening last night in Sweden” to see that there was a link between immigration and terror attacks in Europe.
After being widely mocked with the #lastnightinSweden hashtag on Twitter, Trump clarified he had been referencing a Fox News story about rape:
My statement as to what's happening in Sweden was in reference to a story that was broadcast on @FoxNews concerning immigrants & Sweden.

The Swedish Government hit back later that week with and English-language fact check that dispels their claims.
And enraged listener’s to Farage’s show did pick-up the phone, just to Ofcom rather than him.
Now a spokesman for the watchdog has confirmed: “We are investigating whether comments made in this programme were materially misleading.”
I think we could save them the time…
