Zac Goldsmith got trounced last night in the Richmond by-election by the Lib Dems in a contest that was largely seen as a referendum on Tory Brexit plans.
Goldsmith had said he wanted Britain to leave the EU, while the Lib Dems campaigned against a ‘hard Brexit’.
Lib Dem Sarah Olney overturned a 23,000 majority and won just under 50% of the entire vote, with most Labour voters switching to her too.
In a year when right-wingers are winning everywhere, Zac Goldsmith managed to get trounced twice in 7 months. Quite an achievement.
His brother wasn’t impressed
The Lib Dem winner said last night:
And our message is clear: we do not want a hard Brexit. We do not want to pull out of the single market. We will not let intolerance, division and fear win.
At least Zac Goldsmith has time to himself now to find those principles again
