Labour MPs took to the House of Commons today to urge the British government to ratify the Istanbul Convention on domestic violence.

The Istanbul Convention has been hailed as one of the most comprehensive pieces of legislation written anywhere on dealing with domestic violence.

One of the more powerful speakers was Labour’s Jess Phillips, who was also praised by other MPs

But guess who was also listening… Tory MP Philip Davies, a man who would likely describe eating muesli as political correctness gawn mad.

Davies tried to interject Phillips’ speech in Parliament today. She shut him down.

Davies later told the House of Commons:

I have a fundamental objection to the whole premise that we only need to deal with violence against women…

Labour MPs pointed out the legislation was aimed at all victims of domestic violence, not just women.

Once again, Philip Davies doesn’t bother paying attention to the issue at hand but gets on his hobby horse

  1. Vera-Anne Anderson says:

Philip Davies is a misogynist sexist idiot.
The thing I am proudest of is that as a single mother who divorced an abusive husband I raised a wonderful son who is a feminist and an amazing husband and father.

  2. I’m unfortunate enough to have that numpty Davies as my MP. Again and again he proves himself to be an obnoxious, self-serving self publicist. He’ll do anything to get his ugly mug in the local rag.

  3. Most MP’s carry a camera around with them and ask obliging people to take their photo’s. Aim the camera over their heads and if they are Tory refuse to be photographed with them.

  4. Jess Phillips was great. By the way, for the record, it wasn’t just Labour MPs who ‘ took to the House of Commons today to urge the British government to ratify the Istanbul Convention on domestic violence’ – it was a private member’s bill introduced by SNP MP Eilidh Whiteford.
