Clinton Trump

Last night was the first of three debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump.

There were no knockout punches but there were plenty of tense moments, and funny tweets.

Here are some of the key highlights

Early on in the debate, Trump was asked about his tax returns, which he tried to switch to the controversy over Clinton’s emails.

Trump said:

I will release my tax returns, against my lawyer’s wishes, when she releases her 33,000 emails that have been deleted. As soon as she releases them, I will release my tax returns and that’s against my lawyers say don’t do it.

Trump’s opportunity came early when he slammed Clinton over NAFTA and other trade deals – claiming they were losing American jobs.

You go to new England, Ohio, Pennsylvania, you go anywhere you want, Secretary Clinton, and you will see devastation where manufacturing is down 30, 40, sometimes 50 percent. NAFTA is the worst trade deal maybe ever.

Clinton did not have a lot to say in response.

Trump’s worst segment came fairly early on when, in a debate on race, he was asked why he kept perpetuating the ‘birther’ controversy about Obama.

He slipped up a few times and Clinton called him a racist.

Hillary Clinton’s first big shot came when she attacked Trump for his business acumen and the way he “stiffed” workers over the decades.

He replied: “That’s called business”

Clinton’s final and most sustained shot at Trump came near the end when she unloaded about his comments about women. Trump couldn’t say much in response to that either

There were no knockout punches but Trump showed himself to be the dangerous madman he is
