Told that the UK steel industry was in crisis and challenged to take action on 15 September, the minister with oversight of the sector, Anna Soubry, told MPs of Redcar steel plant owners SSI:

“The honourable lady can be assured that we are well aware of what is happening in SSI UK”

Later defending his absence from a Commons debate on the issue a few days later, Northern Powerhouse minister James Wharton insisted:

“I am having hourly discussions about this with the team in my department”

The pair were so in the loop that Soubz confessed to a select committee late this afternoon that she found out about the liquidation of the parent company on … errrrr … Twitter:

“A tweet was sent out that we happened to get because we’re on social media in my bedroom in Redcar”
