Iain Duncan Smith opened his conference speech this afternoon with some sincere thank you messages … which were prompted by an autocue (pic via Richard Wheeler).
From minister Lord Freud (who blamed charities for fuelling the rise in food banks) to his political adviser (who was accused of running a prayer session to ‘cure’ a transsexual woman) everyone seemed to be praised with enthusiasm.
When it came to his civil servants, however, Iain seemed to look at his shoes and almost mumble:
Could it be that he was embarrassed?
Knowing that they couldn’t respond in public, bungling Duncan Smith tried to blame the whole Universal Credit fiasco on staff in his own department.
IDS and his permanent secretary were rumoured barely to be on speaking terms over the row.
