Sex scandals during Tim Farron presidency of Lib Dems

Of all the things that Tim Farron could have looked to make light of in his final speech as Lib Dem president:

“There are some parts of the job that I’m happy to pass on.

“The next time any of you get caught with your pants round your ankles the media can call someone else to comment.

Let’s see. On his watch we’ve had:

  • Cyril Smith: exposed as prolific abuser of children
  • Lord Rennard: accused of groping party members
  • Mike Hancock: admitted to ‘degrading’ vulnerable constituent

The distinctly muted laughter said it all: the auditorium knew it was an off gag.

UPDATE: A lawyer for one of the victims of the above parliamentarians tells Scrapbook:

“How can the Liberal Democrats expect anyone to take their conference policy announcement on mandatory reporting of child abuse seriously, if they think sexual abuse by their own party members is a laughing matter?

  1. At least the Libs are having a conversation about abuse, unlike Labour who prefer to stick their head in the sand and hope it goes away. More revelations about collusion are afoot also.

  2. “Update: Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg said this afternoon,
Cyril Smith was a larger-than-life character and one of the most recognisable and likeable politicians of his day.

I am deeply saddened to hear the news of his death today, and offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Everybody in Rochdale knew him not only as their MP but also as a friend.

He was a true Liberal, dedicated to his constituency, always showing great passion and determination.

Cyril was a colourful politician who kept the flame of Liberalism alive when the party was much smaller than it is today.

Rochdale and Britain have sadly lost one of their great MPs, and I think we can safely say there will never be an MP quite like Cyril Smith again.

  3. Eleanor Scott says:

I would love to know what Tim Farron did with the dossier he himself asked me to give to the Lib Dem Party. I met him in March. Dossier provided. Letters of comfort from him and Nick Clegg.

Passed to the supposedly correct person.

    Silence.

  4. These people just cannot help it, they simply either do not think or the mouth works and then the brain clicks in, or of course they are stupid.

I’m sorry but if Clegg is the answer to my issue as a disabled person god help us all.

  5. Matk taha I wonder how your sense of humour would have been if you’d been forced to perform sex acts on many men & to bend over at their request to be repeatedly raped? It seems to me that your attitude & others like you are one of the reasons this managed to stay unpunished for so long
