Irony has died today after a short illness.
Lib Dem press release from four days ago announcing proposals for mandatory reporting of child abuse had been approved by their party conference:
“Inquiries have repeatedly found some professionals failing to report concerns about child protection, which has resulted in further abuse. This can’t go on a minute longer.”
“Abuse cannot be ignored. If you have even the slightest suspicion a victim is being abused, the law should say: ‘report it’.”
The Guardian yesterday on cover-up allegations:
“A senior Liberal Democrat has been accused of ordering a personal assistant to destroy a document containing allegations of abuse and mismanagement against the late paedophile MP Cyril Smith.”
Former Rochdale MP and West Midlands MEP Liz Lynne denies any recollection of these events and is currently standing to be party president …
… which is fitting as the incumbent yesterday made a sick ‘pants round your ankles’ gag about the scandals which have occurred on his watch.
UPDATE: Full statement from Liz Lynne …
I have no recollection whatsoever of anyone telling me about child abuse either at Knowl View school or relating to Cyril Smith while I was the MP for Rochdale from 1992 to 1997. If anyone had brought it up I would have taken the appropriate action. Anyone who has anything to report must take it to the police.
