A furious Diane Abbot pops up at PMQs to raise the case of desperate residents facing a £14,000 annual hike in their rent after the country’s richest MP bought a stake in their properties.
With Tory Richard Benyon’s family company buying into the New Era estate in East London, up to 90 families could be left facing eviction. Tenants have been told by the council they can’t be re-housed as they aren’t currently homeless — leaving them facing the ultimate prospect of bailiffs.
As the Hackney Citizen reports, this includes people who could not be more vulnerable.
“I’ve got an uncle who is 85, his wife is 90 and she has Alzheimer’s and is blind. There is going to be no provisions for us. We will have to be evicted by bailiffs before we are re-homed.
But Benyon was unmoved by the intervention — literally.
Richard Benyon sat motionless at very back of Commons chamber during Diane Abbott question to PM about his company's rent rises in Hackney.
