Cravatted shambles Mike Hancock MP is somehow managing to hang on to his paid cabinet role on Portsmouth City Council — despite an outstanding allegation of sexually assaulting a vulnerable constituent and a report into claims of bullying (inter alia) finding he breached the council’s code of conduct.
Council leader Gerald Vernon-Jackson presumably didn’t become the 22nd most influential Lib Dem by floundering over decisions such as Hancock’s seemingly inevitable ejection. With the MP still due to face a council committee, GVJ told local hacks:
“The sub-committee has decided that there is a case to answer but not what the conclusion of that is or whether Mike is guilty or not. It seems premature to me to fire somebody before a committee has made that decision.’”
Hancock’s continued membership of Portsmouth’s executive is all the more surprising given there is a precedent for him to step down — namely resigning the Lib Dem whip in the Commons to fight sex assault allegations.
He’s as clingy as the limpets in Portsmouth Harbour.
