With David Cameron set to host Mitt Romney at 10 Downing Street later today, an adviser to the Republican presidential nominee has shocked observers by suggesting Barack Obama does not “fully appreciate” the special relationship because he isn’t of “Anglo Saxon heritage”.

With US websites seizing on the remarks when they were published by the Telegraph late last night, the  disastrous briefing from an unnamed aide threatens to overshadow the visit:

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and [Romney] feels that the special relationship is special … The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”.

Romney is also due to meet Ed Miliband before attending a $75,000 per head fundraiser at an unspecified venue in central London.

With his campaign’s dog-whistle appeal to base racial prejudices, perhaps Romney should be greeted by Michael Howard instead.

  1. Graham Jones says:

More like Obama can’t bear to be in the same room with the bunch of dickheads parading as the the UK coalition!

  2. When Francois Hollande was in London a few months ago Cameron didn’t meet him. He claimed that it would be a breach of protocol to meet a candidate running against the incumbent in an election. When was that protocol changed?

  3. LOL! Barack Obama is 1/2 white and was raised by his white mother and white grandparents. His Kenyan father was absent 99% of Obama’s childhood. As has widely been reported, Obama has celebrated his Irish ancestry and is also a distant cousin of former U.S. vice-president Dick Cheney.

This “Anglo-Saxon” stuff is just plain racist. Romney has been using a lot of racist imagery in the last few weeks. It’s disgusting.

Also, I wonder how Americans of French, Polish, Irish, Czech, Russian, and other non-Anglo Saxon European ancestry feel about this statement? Probably as repulsed as do Americans of African, Native American, and Asian ancestry feel. Seriously, I wonder how many Latino Americans will feel about this message. Not very good. As always, the GOP is willing to embrace its inner Klansman to win votes.

  4. It’s so typical of Cameran to back the AMERICAN RIGHT WING FACHISTS [or could it be FAT SHITS ] PARTY. He’s odviously more comfortable mixing with the far right, as he has surrounded himself with a lot of FAT SHITS at Westminster.

  5. The “We” obviously refers to the US and UK’s Anglo-Saxon heritage rather than Romney’s, given the comments a few words later in the sentence about the special relationship:

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and [Romney] feels that the special relationship is special … The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”.

Until today I don’t think Cameron had even met Romney so pretending it was a reference to Romney and Cameron’s relationship is absurd.
