Today Mary Portas has released a government-commissioned report on the state of the UK high street, describing it as “at crisis point”, in part due to out of town shopping centres. What Portas doesn’t mention, however, is the role she has played in this.

As PR man Simon Francis points out, however, Portas actually works for a Who’s Who of shopping centres and chain stores at whose door she has laid the blame for the blight afflicting the high streets.

The list of clients of her Yellow Door marketing agency includes two Westfield complexes, as well as a list of chain fashion retailers including Clarks, Oasis and Republic. She has even boasted on her Telegraph blog:

“I found myself involved on many levels with the development of Westfield, London”

If you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Unless you’re Mary Portas, in which case you’re both.

    Another story written off the back of a Labour Party press release… Maybe Scrapbook should take the time to read the publication, which is under 50 pages, before writing total nonsense.

    The criticism of Portas’ hypocrisy is fair and your comment misses the point of that.

    Quite how it has taken this long to come to the conclusion that business rates are too high is a farce at the door of all political parties and local councils. Hopefully it will allow for independents and new starters to get a foot in the door without the burden of huge rental liabilities, and not just more Tesco Express stores etcetera.

  3. Seems a long time ago since this article but hardly anything has changed yet on the high street. I keep my hopes that I will luckily one day bump into Ms Portas but so far no luck…Business Rates are a killer for independents especially when you have national chains move into villages like Shaw to milk them for the shareholders back in London…
