The English Defence League has gone to great lengths to disguise the seam of fascism running through its ranks, even engaging in the ostentatious burning of swastikas at organised rallies. But the true sympathies of EDL organisers were been laid bare today after administrators of their official Facebook page were caught out signing messages with “88” – Nazi code for Heil Hitler. The symbolism of these numerals in far right circles is long established:

Eighty-eight is used as code among Neo-Nazis to identify each other. H is the 8th letter of the alphabet, so 88 is taken to stand for HH which in turn means Heil Hitler. For example, the number is used in the song “88 rock’n’roll band” by the neo-Nazi group Landser. The late convicted Order terrorist David Lane wrote “Fourteen Words” and 88 Precepts, and the numbers are often found in combination (1488, 14/88, etc.) … This form of the number has inspired the naming of the groups Column 88Unit 88, White Legion 88 and Barselc88.

The exchange below was captured by Expose Tweets (@exposetweets). Other examples have been recorded by Scrapbook, with some added even as this post was being written.

Disturbingly, the oiks went international this week in attending protests against the Park51 Islamic community centre in Lower Manhattan.

The EDL won’t be going away any time soon.

  12. That’s my screencap – how exciting. Anyway, I asked the admin why he was using it. He called me a troll, spammed the thread with other numbers, and finally told me that it was merely part of a new numerical system and that other admins had ’11, 22, 33 etc’. He then deleted the thread.

Funny because the admins this morning were using their old numbers and ’88’ was the only one of this fictitious new system that I have seen.

  14. I have seen a file from a CAB client (I volunteer there a couple of days a week) whose e-mail address contains 1488. I’ve forgotten the guy’s name (a Polish guy, I remember that much) but perhaps I should make a note of it for the other people there next time I see the file.

  17. Yeah that was an anti-nazi flag they were burning there tho… a crossed out swastika. It’s a problematic image for anti-nazis because the swastika is so prominent that it looks like you’re wearing a… well, a swastika, at first glance.

  22. It’s a shame the oiks of the EDL can’t actually write using the language of the ‘culture’ they seek to defend.
