Silly season media management the Clever(ly) way: calling Simon Hughes "a dick"

The forced marriage between the Tories and the social liberal faction of the Lib Dems is deteriorating faster than Scrapbook hoped. Only James Cleverly, the Conservatives’ number two in the London Assembly, will be able to explain why referring to the deputy leader of his party’s partner in government as “a dick” was a good idea:

And just in case the rant was overlooked by the copy-starved news machine he had a link auto-posted to his 4,200 followers on Twitter. Bravo!

One can scarcely think of a more effective way to generate “coalition rift” stories during silly season. Perhaps Cleverly should ask CCHQ press office who they think is a dick?

It isn’t Simon Hughes.

Quote of the day: straight choice edition

Has Simon Hughes bedded in to his role outside the tent p*ssing in as left-wing conscience of the Liberal Democrats? On the evidence of this soundbite, given to R4′s World at One in response to David Cameron’s intention to end lifetime tenancies on council houses, the answer would be a resounding “yes”:

“It is a Prime Ministerial idea. It has no more validity than that”.

These “Prime Ministers”, eh? Who the hell do they think they are!

Ed Miliband campaign enlist sporting help in fight against unfair budget

Ed Miliband’s leadership campaign has enlisted cricketing help in the fight against Tuesday’s emergency budget, encouraging “hundreds of people” to email 2005 Ashes hero Simon Jones:

Speaking exclusively to Scrapbook, Jones said:

“It was flattering to be contacted by Ed’s team regarding the budget. The 25% cuts for DCMS will see many sporting initiatives, such as free swimming for children, face the axe.”

The fast-medium bowler then added:

“But I was rather confused when they started going on about Bermondsey and the Liberal Democrats. I live in Cardiff and voted Plaid Cymru.”

Liberal Democrat deputy leader Simon Hughes was unavailable for comment.

UPDATE: Amusing online slips aside, Miliband Jnr is now on 14 CLP nominations to Miliband Snr’s 8. It’ll be interesting to see whether this lead holds.
