Clegg’s office aware of party Islamophobia — but doing nothing

A leaked email reveals that Nick Clegg’s office are aware of vile Islamophobic remarks by a Liberal Democrat candidate but are doing nothing because they are “carrying on with the by-election”.

The message from a Liberal Democrat close to the scandal (sent to Scrapbook via our tips form) shows Dave Stones’ rants — including suggesting a topless bar and pork restaurant should be built next to a mosque — have been discussed at the most senior levels of the party.

In addition to Nick Clegg’s office, the email reveals president Tim Farron and chief whip Alistair Carmichael are also party to the conspiracy of silence over the row.

“Liberal Democrat HQ all the way to Nick Clegg’s office and key figures like the President and Chief Whip are aware of this and we are carrying on with the by-election.”

After the issue was raised by Tom Blenkinsop in the Commons ysterday, the ethnic minority press have started to pick up on the story, with Asian Image following the lead of papers in the North East.

The reaction to this incident stands in marked contrast with the the party’s “zero tolerance policy” on racism and claims by Nick Clegg that “The Liberal Democrats abhor racism in all its forms”.

On the 30th anniversary of the Scarman report into the Brixton riots the Lib Dem leader said:

“Racism must be met with a steel fist”

Except when it’s a Liberal Democrat by-election candidate, of course!

Pressure mounts on Clegg to sack anti-Muslim “hate crime” candidate

Nick Clegg with in Redcar with local MP Ian Swales, who has refused to comment on the scandal

Nick Clegg is facing growing pressure to sack a Lib Dem candidate responsible for vile Islamophobic rants after religious and anti-racism organisations described remarks by would-be Redcar councillor Dave Stones as “a hate crime”. Meanwhile, local MP Tom Blekinsop has written to Nick Clegg demanding to know “what action your party intends to take against the people who have behaved so disgracefully”.

The developments follow Political Scrapbook’s publication of sickening Facebook posts last week. Dave Stones, who is a candidate for Newcomen ward on Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council, spread false rumours about the Muslim community and ranted that a pork restaurant and topless bar called “You Mecca Me Hot” should be built “across the street” from a mosque. He added chillingly: “Then we’ll see who’s tolerant.”

Farooq Murad the secretary general of the leading Islamic representative organisation, the Muslim Council of Britain, said:

“We might expect this sort of language from the BNP, but not from someone hoping to stand as a candidate for the Liberal Democrats. We hope that Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and other Lib Dem party leaders will take swift action over this affair and think seriously about who represents them as a candidate”

Meanwhile the Coexistence Trust said:

“This is not an inappropriate comment on any form of social media, this is a hate crime.”

Tom Blenkinsop’s letter is reproduced in full below:

How much longer can the Liberal Democrat leadership ignore this scandal?

What’s the point of Nick Clegg?

Top 12 Political Cock-Ups 2011: Clegg forgets he’s in charge of the country

The antidote to the tedium of annual current affairs round-ups, here is the February installment of Scrapbook’s Top 12 Political Cock-Ups of 2011.

Having been a tough year for Nick Clegg, it is difficult to select a particular low point. But the moment in February when he forgot he was in de-facto charge of the country has to be one of the chief contenders.

Whilst Cameron was selling weapons to Middle East dictators, his deputy, when asked by the Metro whether he was in charge of the country in the PM’s absence, said:

“Yeah, I suppose I am. I forgot about that. I’m hoping  to take the end of the week off … Someone else will have to do it then.”

One assumes Messrs Huhne, Laws and Farron would have been delighted to help him out.

581 Days Later: from the Rose Garden to PMQs (via Brussels)

How’s that “New Politics” working out for you, Nick?

Climate change denial Tory MEPs rebel to vote with UKIP and BNP

Conservatives MEPs have been branded “extremists” after rebelling against their own party’s policy on climate change. Votes in the European Parliament put them at loggerheads with all five mainstream political groupings in Brussels, with the Conservative members choosing to ally themselves with, erm, UKIP and the BNP.

In a slap in the face for David Cameron’s Vote Blue Go Green mantra, the European Tories voted:

  • against a paragraph stating that scientific evidence overwhelmingly shows the impacts of climate change.
  • against a call to move beyond a 20% emissions reduction target.
  • against a paragraph welcoming an 80% carbon reduction by 2050.

Cameron’s recent problems with seditious backbenchers in Westminster come off the back of long-standing rebellion and controversy in Europe. During his leadership campaign, he pledged to pull out of the centre-right European People’s Party, to form a new European Conservatives and Reformists group (ECR)

The voting record of parties in the ECR is a shameful embarrassment to the Conservatives, with the deputy PM famously describing the group as:

“nutters, anti-Semites, people who deny climate change exists and homophobes”

They’re going out of their way to prove Clegg right.

YouGov: Liberal Democrats slump to three percent with 18-24 year olds

Support for the Liberal Democrats is plummeting faster than the value of Greek bonds, with just three percent of 18-24 year olds saying they would vote for the party. The results from YouGov depict a vertiginous decline in popularity amongst university age voters since the party decided to embrace the Conservatives. In April 2010 36 percent would have backed Clegg.

The party may yet resort to bribing young people to support them when the pollsters ring.

About £9,000 should do it.

Jury in John Hemming MP kitten theft trial retires to consider verdict

Having previously told his local paper that he could not promise to curb his philandering, the trial of John Hemming’s wife for stealing his mistress’ cat has provided yet more evidence of the Birmingham MP’s moral bankruptcy.

With the jury now retired to consider its verdict, we can reflect on Hemming’s bizarre domestic arrangements, which see him living openly with two different women. Scrapbook’s ultimate highlight has to be this gem, which reveals he may rival Nick Cleggover’s “no more than 30” boast:

“I recall I had said that there were about 26 different people with whom he had had liaisons, but at this point we did have quite severe arguments about what he was doing.”

Now we know about the notches on his bedpost perhaps he will now follow the example set by his leader and rate his own sexual prowess.
