Boris says questions on NewsCorp sponsorship are “fucking bollocks”

Under pressure Boris Johnson turned the air blue for the second time in the mayoral race this morning. Challenged over revelations that he sought commercial sponsorship from News International — at the same time they were being investigated by the police force which he controls — Boris ranted at the BBC’s London political editor:

“Stuff [Tim] Donovan and his fucking bollocks”

Perhaps this explains Johnson’s flippancy over phone hacking. Left Foot Forward have a full run-down of Boris’ quotes on phone hacking, which include:

“I think it looks like a politically motivated put up job.”

“You are trying to make a song and dance about nothing in my view.”

With the forced smile which followed this gaffe, perhaps the campaign is finally getting to Boris.

Boris’ campaign bus ‘ticketed for parking on double yellow lines’

With the London mayoral campaign into its last week, a parking ticket probably isn’t what Boris’ team need most at the moment. But the above picture appears to show a traffic warden taking issue to the Mayor’s campaign bus parking up on double yellow lines, on Beckenham High Street

It’s probably a pretty accurate metaphor for Boris’ transport policies, though.

Boris lies during mayoral debate: says fares “will go down” if elected

Last night’s BBC mayoral debate saw Boris Johnson telling bare faced porkies, contradicting his own plans by claiming that transport fares in London “will go down” if he is elected.

After Green candidate Jenny Jones highlighted that everyone on the platform — with the exception of Boris — had pledged to reduce fares, the mayor blustered:

“They will go down in an honest and sustainable way under me”

Having already hiked bus fares by 50% and some tube ones by more than 20%, is this not the same Boris Johnson who has pledged to raise them by 2% above inflation every year for the next four years?

Ken handed the mayor a copy of his own plans while the audience laughed.

Boris: not so funny now.

YouGov poll: Boris Johnson seen as a “mayor for the rich”

A YouGov poll today reveals that over a third of Londoners believe that Boris Johnson is a “Mayor for the Rich”. 37% of those polled believed that Boris would best defend the wealthy – less than two percent said he would stand up for the poor.

But while Ken Livingstone has narrowed the gap with Boris since last month’s poll, the Tory incumbent continues to outperform his party in London – leading Ken by six percentage points.

Good luck finding references to the Conservative Party on Boris’ campaign website.

Obsessed? Andrew Gilligan churns out 27 attacks on Ken in one month

With the Daily Telegraph’s Andrew Gilligan pouring derision on Ken Livingstone for trying to move the mayoral race away from negative campaigning, does the “journalist” protest too much?

As noted by the blog Gilligan Watch, who have surveyed all of his ramblings, the number of attack posts Gilligan produces is frankly staggering. Andy has churned out 27 hatchet jobs in the last month – comprising 75% of his blogging output.

This includes:

  • 27 posts attacking Ken
  • 2 posts praising Boris
  • 1 declaring Brian Paddick the winner of a debate (so he didn’t have to say it was Ken)

The animated GIF below relates a pretty accurate metaphor.

Now Boris challenged over tax after “f**king liar” lift confrontation

Having been put on the back foot over his own tax affairs, Ken Livingstone has now challenged Boris Johnson over income from a TV production company. After the issue was raised in an LBC radio debate this morning, media sources claim a “red with rage” Boris confronted Ken “nose to nose” in a lift, ranting:

“You’re a f**king liar! You’re a f**king liar! You’re a f**king liar!”

Ken’s team are now briefing three questions that Boris Johnson should answer:

1: Did he pay income tax on all of his earnings from Finland Station? Can he categorically say that he didn’t receive any income through dividends and instead pay capital gains tax of 18% (rather than paying income tax at 40%)

2: When he sold his shareholdings in Finland Station to David Jeffcock and Barnaby Spurrier – did he pay income tax on the money that he received at 40%, or capital gains tax at 18%?

3: Did he employ anyone?

It’s all getting rather heated as the home straight looms.
