<p>It&#8217;s the goat story that shows <a href="http://taxpayersalliance.org/news/goat-embarrasses-government">no signs</a> of <a href="http://liberalconspiracy.org/2010/07/23/goat-embarrasses-government-spending-page/">slowing down</a>! This week, <em>Scrapbook</em> reported that after showing up the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=lf#!/votegoat?ref=ts">Treasury&#8217;s &#8220;Spending Challenge&#8221; site</a>, many were wondering how long it would be until the goat* became more popular than the Liberal Democrats.</p>
<p>Well, it appears we need ponder no longer. A YouGov poll, released this week, puts the <a href="http://today.yougov.co.uk/politics/lib-dem-support-drops">Liberal Democrats on a lowly 13%</a>. As this is an evidence-based gossip blog, <em>Scrapbook</em> set about <a href="http://today.yougov.co.uk/sites/today.yougov.co.uk/files/YG-Archives-Pol-Sun-results-200710.pdf">poring over the figures</a> and discovered something explosive: <strong>the goat already has more followers than the Lib Dems</strong>.</p>
<p>In a poll of over 2000 people, just 243 said they would vote for the junior coalition partners if there was an election tomorrow.</p>
<p><em>Meanwhile, over 900 people have been swept up in Goatmania**.</em></p>
<p>*As co-owners, <em>Scrapbook</em> would rather not be involved in the factionalism that threatens to tear the left apart over <a href="http://liberalconspiracy.org/2010/07/23/goat-embarrasses-government-spending-page/">the issue of naming the goat</a>.</p>
<p>**If you&#8217;re still unsure why  you should <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23votegoat">#VoteGoat</a>, read <a href="http://taxpayersalliance.org/news/spending-challenge-race-hate-meets-comedy-gold">this</a>.</p>

<p>A Populus survey for <em>The Times</em> has Labour level pegging with the Tories in the crucial seats that will decide the next election.</p>
<ul>
<li><em>The Times&#8217;</em> Peter Riddel <a href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article7054655.ece">writes</a>: &#8220;The poll suggests that recent talk of a Tory “wobble” has affected voters’ expectations&#8221; with &#8220;a swing of about 6.7 per cent to the Tories from Labour since 2005 in those seats&#8221;.</li>
<li>Anthony Wells at <em>UK Polling Report</em> <a href="http://ukpollingreport.co.uk/blog/archives/2499">calculates that</a> &#8220;the swing this poll suggests in the marginals is the equivalent of a 10 point lead nationally, a larger lead than most polls from other companies have been showing in recent weeks&#8221;.</li>
</ul>
<p>In YouGov&#8217;s daily poll the Tories maintain their <a href="http://politicalbetting.com/index.php/archives/2010/03/08/tories-and-labour-move-up-one-in-the-daily-poll/">slender five point gap</a> over Labour with both parties up 1 against the Lib Dems.</p>
<p><em>Curioser and curioser.</em></p>

<p>Peter Riddell reports that the <a href="http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/politics/article6947932.ece">latest Populus poll for <em>The Times</em></a> shows the Conservative lead cut to single digits for the first time this year. If this was replicated nationally on election day, running these through <a href="http://www.electoralcalculus.co.uk/">Electoral Calculus</a> shows that the outcome would be a hung parliament with David Cameron 20 seats short of a majority.</p>
<p><a style="text-decoration: none;" href="http://politicalscrapbook.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/electoral_calculus_20091207.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2866" title="Electoral Calculus prediction" src="http://politicalscrapbook.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/electoral_calculus_20091207.jpg" alt="Electoral Calculus prediction" width="438" height="184" /></a></p>
<p>As rumours of the figures spread across the twittersphere, one leading Tory blogger poured cold water on this filip to Labour activists:</p>
<p><a href="http://politicalscrapbook.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/torybear_poll_tweet.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-2865" title="Torybear poll tweet" src="http://politicalscrapbook.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/torybear_poll_tweet.jpg" alt="Torybear poll tweet" width="525" height="258" /></a></p>
<p>As his friends will testify, <em>Scrapbook</em> is always up for a bit of nonsense and wouldn&#8217;t want to disappoint the bear.</p>
<p><em>Game on!</em></p>
