The above clip, spotted by an eagle-eyed blogger, gives a clue where George Osborne has been searching for ideas — his shares in exchange for employment rights idea from the Conservative conference was referenced in an early episode of The Simpsons.
This comes as a government business advice website warns of the disadvantages of the scheme, including high administration costs and red tape, negative effects on morale and potentially losing control of your own company through share dilution.
And if you’re a limited company you may even have to set up your own, erm, internal market:
“If employees eventually wish to sell their shares in an unlisted company (one without shares on a public stock exchange), you may need to run an internal market for the shares, perhaps through setting up an employee benefit trust.”
At least now we know what George Osborne will be watching this evening.
