Immigration minister: it’s best to talk “moderately” on the subject

As we await David Cameron’s well-trailed speech on immigration this morning, we can reflect with irony on remarks made by Damian Green in the current edition of Total Politics magazine. Green is the, erm, immigration minister:

“The danger in the past has been ministers who talk tough, but act weak. It’s much better to act toughly and talk moderately … I’ll know I’ve succeeded when weeks have gone by and I haven’t been on Newsnight talking about immigration. At that point, it will have become one of the backwater political subjects.”

We hope Green will enjoy Newsnight this evening.
