UK statistics chief: Boris Johnson is “damaging public trust”

The Head of the UK Statistics Authority has written to Mayor of London, Boris Johnson; warning him that his misuse of statistics could be

“damaging to public trust”.

Sir Michael Scholar was compelled to write to Boris after he used Transport for London Crime Statistics as part of a media event ahead of their normal release date in Transport for London’s regular quarterly statistical
bulletin.

Although TFL statistics released are not covered by the Authority’s rules, Sir Michael made it clear that Boris followed poor practice and would have breached the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

“that selective prior release… was poor practice.”

Boris is using statistics as a drunkard uses lampposts — for support rather than for illumination.
