Liberal Democrats: forest sale is a "money making scam"

With 460,000 people signing 38 Degrees’ petition and Forest of Dean MP Mark Harper being pelted with eggs at a public meeting, Caroline Spelman looked to signal a possible retreat over the proposed sale of 258,000 hectares of woodland this weekend.

The Liberal Democrats’ reputation for telling voters in different areas different things is hard-won. While opposition to the woodland sell-off has been described in Westminster as “scaremongering” a similar sale of forest in Scotland was dismissed as a “money making scam”. The plan to “sell off the family silver” was subject to a fierce campaign from Liberals north of the border.

No wonder Defra is a Lib Dem-free zone.

    Do you actually think all parties have the same policies north and south of the Border?

    They don’t even have them within the same street. My sister and I once put the ward councillor to the test over a swimming pool which was potentially facing closure. We agreed that when he came round campaigning, I would be pro, she would be against. He duly and predictably made two opposing commitments!

    I asked the local Libdem agent, (I’ve known him for some time) his views on the Coalition, he started off by telling me how supportive he was, then slowly and surely as I asked him questions, he turned against it. By the end of the conversation he couldn’t give any positive reason as to why he supported it.
