Sheridan compares himself to Gretna FC

The fate of convicted perjurer Tommy Sheridan is just dripping with poetic irony. After defeating News International in his defamation action following allegations of marital infidelity Sheridan stood outside the Court of Session in Edinburgh and likened himself to Scottish football team Gretna F.C., who had recently defied the odds to appear in the Scottish Cup final:

“Gretna have made it into Europe for the first time in their lives, but what we have done in the last five weeks is the equivalent of Gretna taking on Real Madrid in the Bernabeu and beating them on penalties, that’s what we’ve done.”

Two years later Gretna crashed out of the Scottish Premier League and went into insolvent liquidation.

Forget the Bernabeu – it’s Barlinnie Sheridan’s heading for!

Poor Tommy Sheridan. Almost every time in history that left wingers have challenged the establishment, smear campaigns have been used to discredit them.

We all owe Sheridan a lot for his role in defeating the Poll Tax, which in turn weakened Thatcher

To be honest I really don’t care about Sheridan’s sexual habits. The less thought about the sex life of any politician the better

Would have though Scrapbook wouldn’t have gone for the easy option of putting in a cheap boot

As a proud socialist, and someone who’s had considerable dealings with former comrade Sheridan in the past, I take exception to any argument that challenging Goliath justifies lying. I can assure you, Jasper, that I despise News International more than most and celebrate anyone who’ll challenge them – but I’ve always believed honesty to be the mark of a good socialist, and a quality that Tommy Sheridan clearly lacks.

Tommy Sheridan has actually done News International a big favour – because now anytime someone accuses them of dishonesty they can legitimately argue: “well that’s what Sheridan said and he was a liar too!” Furthermore, were it not for his egotism I’m quite convinced that the Scottish Socialist Party would still be represented in the Scottish Parliament (you can’t tell me that the Greens are more popular in Glasgow than socialists!)

The left of Scottish politics misses Tommy Sheridan, but he wasn’t taken from us this week – he left us long ago.

Jasper, the left as a whole and in Scotland more specifically is better of without tubes like Sheridan. To say he defeated the Poll Tax is a spectacular over statement. His hubris and ego helped destroy his party. The damage inflicted on the left by his actions more than outweigh any positives he may have contributed.

Pointing out that the man was a liar and perjurer is hardly putting a cheap boot in. He got what he deserved.

    LOL. Stupid Sheridan.

I couldn’t give two shits about his sex life either, and nor does anyone else – he got what was coming to him by trying to sue the papers for something that was true.

Should have just kept his mouth (and his legs) shut.
