Grassroots campaign nears victory as Labour HQ consider “Against The Odds” video for TV broadcast
A grassroots campaign by Labour activist and prolific tweeter Ellie Gellard (@BevaniteEllie) has left a short video produced for Labour conference in Brighton poised to be selected as the party’s next official political broadcast. Scrapbook has heard whispers that the TV debut of “Against The Odds”, which utilises archival footage of the party’s role in social and political change, is now being considered for at the very highest levels within Labour HQ.
A LabourList post by Gellard, who also blogs at The Stilettoed Socialist, precipitated steadily snowballing support for the move. An online petition now boasts more than 300 signatures, Eddie Izzard has tweeted his support and those who have emailed Victoria Street to back the video are rumoured to include Alastair Campbell, who has blogged his approval, saying “it’s a powerful reminder of why Labour values matter”.
If you haven’t seen it yet, you can check Against The Odds out below. Scrapbook’s favourite line is:
“They said the son of a miner would never become a minister. But no one told Nye Bevan.”
If the video is selected it would add to the growing list of blogger initiatives adopted by the party, including a campaign webchat with Douglas Alexander.
Fingers crossed.
