The coming week’s confluence of the Conservative Party and Manchester reminded Scrapbook of this lyrical turn by one of the city’s famous sons:

So who says Kerry McCarthy has a monopoly on referencing indie lyrics?
*Dave Cameron professes to like Morrissey and The Smiths but he is due to be outed this week as a “Phil Collins obsessed geek”.

Perhaps. But he was definitely more fond of Tory bashing – as is the rest of Manchester as it happens.

If I remember correctly You Are The Quarry came out shortly after the Iraq invasion and Morrissey was dead set against it, like many, hence the Irish Blood English Heart lyrics ‘sick to death of Labour and Tories’. He mentions his hatred for the Tories in several songs, Labour only get put down once.
Not to mention his (highly distasteful) remarks about the Brighton bombing.
The actual word is “rise”
