The announcement of the depature of business minister Shriti Vadera from the government initially reignited speculation that she was to be appointed European commissioner by Gordon Brown as mooted by the Times in June. However according to Benedict Brogan it is rumoured that she is to undertake a role with the G20 economic forum.
That’s not official yet, but that’s what I’ve heard from a well-placed Westminster source. Brown wants the G20 to have some kind of permanent secretariat, and it looks as if Vadera might be helping to run it. It would be a bit like being a financial regulator for the world economy.
Her domineering style and flare-ups with civil servants have “become the stuff of Whitehall legend”.
Are G20 staff ready for ‘shrieking Shriti’?
UPDATE: Auntie is reporting that Vadera is to “advise the G20 on the design of institutions needed to implement the “framework of sustainable and balanced growth”". The role will be based in Downing Street.
